EIB backs 120-MWp solar project in Kosovo

The project, touted as one of the largest such schemes in the Balkan country, will be built near the capital city of Pristina.

The European Investment Bank (EIB) recently announced a EUR 33 million investment loan for a significant solar farm project in Kosovo. This initiative, which aims to construct a solar farm with a targeted capacity of 100 MW/120 MWp near Pristina, is set to be one of the largest renewable energy developments in the Balkan region.

The project also benefits from substantial support from Team Europe, including a EUR 32 million EU grant channeled through the Western Balkans Investment Framework. Additionally, the EIB’s investment will be complemented by a EUR 29 million loan from the German state-owned investment and development bank, KfW.

Once operational, the solar farm is expected to generate approximately 169 GWh of clean electricity annually, resulting in the elimination of around 174,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year. This significant environmental impact aligns with Kosovo’s goals for energy security and renewable energy, contributing to the country’s decarbonization efforts and energy mix diversification, in line with the EU Green Agenda.

Kyriacos Kakouris, EIB Vice-President overseeing activities in the Western Balkans, expressed enthusiasm about the project’s potential to support Kosovo’s energy objectives and contribute to regional sustainability goals.
